The Roots of Soul
At the heart of Soul music is the battle between the sacred and the profane, the good time and the god time. It is an African American art form; a combination of the holy (but ecstatic) sounds of Gospel, and the secular ‘devil’s music’ of Blues, Jazz and R’n’B – with a bit of Country thrown in for good measure. Many of Soul’s greatest artists have their roots in the church, a statement as true today as it was in 1950s.Few people personified soul’s origins more than Sam Cooke. His father was a Baptist minister, and in 1950 he joined America’s leading gospel group, The Soul Stirrers. As the decade progressed he began to be increasingly drawn towards the emerging ‘popular’ sound – leading to accusations of ‘sell out’ from his religious fan base.But Soul’s musical visionary, the man who truly brought together its diverse elements, is the man sometimes called ‘The Genius’ – Ray Charles; a pianist, vocalist and band leader who, as a young man, was heavily influenced by the crooner Nat King Cole. Throughout the 1950s he mixed up popular musical traditions with gospel, creating a new form of pop music…a form of music which crossed racial boundaries, selling to black and white alike.
